Like the majority of women who have become a mother for the very first time, I knew that I wanted to breast feed but had little knowledge of how complex it was and yet how simple, easy and stress and pain free it could and should be - once I had had the help and support from Emily.
There was little to no guidance from the midwives or the health visitors, who just simply wanted to know that you were feeding full stop!
After a couple of months of what I thought was successful feeding, I began to really want to give it up (I can now fully understand why so many women do at the first hurdle!), my baby was getting so distressed and impatient when feeding which in turn made me frustrated, anxious and stressed which of course then affected things. I began to lack confidence to feed when out in public and avoided certain situations for fear of embarrassment that my baby would have a melt down and I couldn't feed her properly. We had to resort to giving her bottles of formula which we really did not want to do. I felt like a complete failure and was angry at my body!
I am beyond grateful for Emily's expert knowledge and tireless support as she truly changed our entire experience with a toolkit of simple hints and tricks to try and put in place. They all worked successfully and now I am so happy to say that I'm nearly at six months of our journey and I'm not looking to stop anytime soon. Emily is the most down to earth, kind, patient and empathetic practitioner who really understood what we were going through.
Her hands on, practical approach was just what we needed and I would genuinely recommend her to anyone who is even considering breast feeding (even if you haven't found any issues yet!) To ensure that you get the best out of the journey for you both. After all, happy Mummy equals a happy baby.
Emily, we will all be forever grateful to have found you and worked with you. We cannot thank you enough.
Emily was incredibly helpful during the later stages of my pregnancy in terms of supporting me with how to prepare for breastfeeding. We discussed how to extract colostrum towards the final few weeks to ensure there was a store built up for when my baby was born. Personally, I feel being successful at this contributed to my success in being able to breastfeed. The colostrum was syringed into my baby when she was born and this gave her the energy to latch within 10 minutes of birth.
Emily has also been really supportive when I had issues with latching and different positions. She took a personalised approach to what worked for me and made me feel confident in persevering through the initial stages of my milk coming in and the soreness of latching. She was also great at advice on what foods boost milk production and energy during the night feeds. Having her support was key in my breastfeeding journey and I know I can always go to her for advice and non-judgemental support.
